Washing An Outdoor (Water Repellant) Jacket
My girlfriend bought me an outdoor Jacket for a Christmas gift. I love it. It’s a humblezing, an Indonesian outdoor jacket. This one is for daily use, I think. It has water repellant coating.
But since December 2025, until now (April 2026), I have never wash it. I know I need to treat it in a special way to not ruin the water repellant coating (and make it just a jacket). So I hesitant to wash it.
Today, I needed to buy drinking water. While at it, my detegent is about to be empty, so let’s restock it. Then I remembered the jacket and thought of buying gentler detegent if needed.
I ask Gemini again about my current condition and how can I wash it. Gemini told me to use a gentle detergent to not risk breaking the water repellant. I ask for recommendation, specifically for Indonesian market.
He recommends a baby detergent brand, and “Gentle Gen” a quite common brand. Which I realize, I have it. He recommends the “Morning Breeze” variant, which turns out, the exact variant that I have!
The Washing
Make sure that the pockets are empty. Zip up all the zippers and loosen all the tighteners. Clean with damp tissue the surface if any dirt is there, which fortunately for my case, I don’t need to do.
Put not too much detegent in the water, then put the jacket there, wash it just by moving the jacket around. No need for hard washing techniques.
Pull up the jacket and rinse with clean water twice. No twisting no drying, just pull up, switch water, put in. To minimize soap or any residue, I rinse it once again by showering the whole jacket from top to bottom.
The Drying
I hanged the soaking jacket on a clothes hanger and left it in the bathroom. I add another clothes hanger since mine was too thin and might left a bad impression on the jacket. Once it’s not dripping wet anymore, move it to the room with AC to dry. No direct sunlight.
The Durable Water Repellant Activation
I need a heat source, but not to hot, lowest setting possible. A dryer is ideal, which I don’t have. An ironing clothes is a good choice, which I also don’t have. A hair dryer it is! We have to heat up all the surfaces. Until when? Until when you splash a little water, it should make water beads instead of saturating the fabric. Do the hair-dryer-ing in a continuous movement. Do not stay in a place for too long.
The Result
The jacket is not too water repellant, which I might need to do once more heating. But it’s water repellant enough and it smells nice! Turns out the thing I have been reluctant to do in months, is done in less than a day! Now I can use the jacket from my girlfriend, proudly, with additional badge: I washed and treated it myself.
